Ashtakavarga: the point system behind transits

Ashtakavarga is a classical scoring method that shows how strongly each sign of your chart supports each planet. It turns the birth chart into a grid of points, so you can see at a glance which signs are friendly ground for Saturn, Jupiter or the Moon, and how a transit through those signs is likely to feel.

Where the points come from

Parashara describes eight reference points: the seven visible planets and the Ascendant. From each of them, a planet gives a benefic point, called a Bindu, to certain houses counted from that reference. Adding the points from all eight references gives the Bhinnashtakavarga of that planet, a row of twelve numbers between zero and eight. A sign with five or more points is supportive ground for that planet; a sign with three or fewer is weak ground.

Sarvashtakavarga

When the rows of the seven planets are added sign by sign, you get the Sarvashtakavarga, a single number for each sign. The total across the twelve signs is always 337. An average sign holds about 28 points. Signs above 28 tend to bring results with less struggle, while signs well below 28 ask for more effort in the matters of that house.

Reading transits with points

When Saturn moves into a sign where its own row shows five or six points, even a feared transit such as Sade Sati often passes with discipline rather than loss. When it moves into a sign with two points, the same transit is felt more sharply. Jupiter crossing a sign with many points brings its gifts more fully. This is why two people with the same Moon sign can have very different experiences of the same transit.

Kakshya: the finer division

Each sign is split into eight parts of 3 degrees 45 minutes, called Kakshyas, ruled in turn by Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury, the Moon and the Ascendant. A transiting planet gives good results while it passes a Kakshya whose lord contributed a point to that sign. This lets you narrow a long transit down to the weeks that matter most.

Using the grid wisely

Ashtakavarga is a support for judgement, not a replacement for it. Read it alongside the Dasha period, the strength of the house lords and the aspects in the chart. A strong grid during a hard Dasha softens the difficulty; a weak grid during a good Dasha can delay results without denying them.

Read your Ashtakavarga

  1. Open your chart. Create or open your saved birth chart.
  2. Check the totals. Note the signs above and below 28 points.
  3. Follow a transit. Find the sign Saturn or Jupiter is in now and read its points in that planet's own row.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Bindu?

A Bindu is one benefic point that a planet receives in a sign from one of the eight reference points.

Why is the total always 337?

The number of points each planet can give is fixed by the classical tables, so the grand total never changes.

What is a good score for a sign?

In the Sarvashtakavarga, anything above 28 is supportive. In a single planet's row, five or more is good.

Does Ashtakavarga include Rahu and Ketu?

Parashara's system uses the seven planets and the Ascendant. Rahu and Ketu are judged separately.

Can it predict the timing of events?

It refines timing within a transit, especially through the Kakshya divisions, but the Dasha sets the broad period.

Why does my Sade Sati feel mild?

Saturn may be passing signs where its own row holds many points.

Do I need an accurate birth time?

Yes. The Ascendant is one of the eight references, and it changes about every two hours.

What is Shodhana?

A reduction process applied before using the grid for longevity and some predictions. Everyday transit reading uses the raw points.

Is a sign with zero points dangerous?

It is weak ground for that planet, so matters there need more care. It is not a prediction of harm.

Which houses should have high scores?

Classical advice is that the eleventh should exceed the tenth, the tenth the ninth, and the twelfth should be lower than the eleventh.

Can I compare two charts with it?

It is mainly used for one chart. For couples, matching and the overlay of charts are better tools.

Where do I see my grid?

Open your birth chart and choose the Ashtakavarga tab to see every planet's row and the combined totals.
