Your free Jaadhagam (birth chart), explained

A Jaadhagam, also called a Janam Kundli or horoscope, is a map of the sky at the moment you were born. Enter your date, time and place of birth to see your Lagna, Moon sign, Nakshatra, planet positions, divisional charts and Dasha periods, each with a short explanation.

What the birth chart shows

The chart divides the sky into twelve signs (Rasis) and twelve houses (Bhavas). The Lagna, or Ascendant, is the sign rising on the eastern horizon when you were born; it becomes the first house and sets the order of the others. Each of the nine Grahas: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu, sits in a sign and a house, and those placements describe different parts of life.

The Moon's position gives your Rasi (Moon sign) and your Janma Nakshatra, the lunar mansion that many families use for naming, matching and daily guidance.

Rasi and Navamsa charts

The main chart is the Rasi chart (D1). Alongside it, Vedic astrology uses divisional charts (Vargas) that magnify one area of life. The most important is the Navamsa (D9), which divides each sign into nine parts and is read for marriage, inner strength and the true quality of a planet. Others include the Dashamsa (D10) for career and the Saptamsa (D7) for children.

Dasha periods: when things happen

The Vimshottari Dasha system divides a 120-year life cycle into planetary periods. Your starting period depends on the Nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth. Each Maha Dasha is divided into Antar Dashas (sub-periods), so you can see which planets are active now and which come next. Astrologers read the Dasha together with transits to judge timing.

Yogas and Doshas

A Yoga is a combination of planets that produces a recognisable result, such as Gajakesari Yoga (Jupiter in a Kendra from the Moon) or Raja Yoga (lords of Kendra and Trikona houses joining). A Dosha is a placement that traditionally needs care, such as Mangal (Kuja) Dosha in marriage matching. We list the main Yogas and Doshas in your chart and explain the conditions that strengthen or cancel them.

Choose your chart style

The same chart can be drawn in different ways. South Indian charts fix the signs in a square grid; North Indian charts fix the houses in a diamond; East Indian charts use their own grid. Switch between styles at any time; the positions do not change.

Accuracy and birth time

The Lagna moves through a sign in about two hours, so the birth time matters. Use the time on the birth certificate or hospital record if you can. If the time is approximate, the Moon sign and Nakshatra are usually still reliable, but the Lagna and Dasha dates may shift. We mark charts with an uncertain time.

Frequently asked questions

What details do I need?

Your date of birth, the time as accurately as possible, and the place of birth. We use the place to find its latitude, longitude and time zone.

Is Jaadhagam the same as Kundli?

Yes. Jaadhagam is the Tamil word, Jathakam is used in Malayalam and Telugu, and Kundli or Janam Patri is common in Hindi. They all mean the birth chart.

What is my Lagna?

The Lagna is the zodiac sign rising in the east at your birth. It is the starting point of the chart and describes your body, temperament and general direction in life.

What is the difference between Rasi and Lagna?

Your Rasi is the sign the Moon was in; your Lagna is the sign rising on the horizon. Many people have different Rasi and Lagna signs.

Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western sign?

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is currently about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology. Most people's Sun sign moves back by one sign.

What is the Navamsa chart used for?

The Navamsa (D9) is read for marriage and partnership, and to judge how strong each planet really is. A planet that is weak in the Rasi chart but well placed in the Navamsa often gives better results than expected.

What is my current Dasha?

Your chart shows the running Maha Dasha and Antar Dasha with start and end dates. The Dasha planet's placement in your chart describes the themes of that period.

Does my chart show Mangal Dosha?

If Mars is in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna, Moon or Venus, the chart is traditionally said to have Mangal Dosha. Many classical cancellations exist, and we show which apply to you.

Which chart style should I use?

Use the style your family or astrologer is used to: South Indian for Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra; North Indian for most of the north; East Indian in Bengal and Odisha. The reading is the same.

Can I save and print my chart?

Yes. Sign in to save charts for yourself and your family, and use Print to download a PDF of the chart.

What if I do not know my birth time?

You can still create a chart with an approximate time. For an important reading, an astrologer can attempt birth-time rectification using past events.

Which Ayanamsa is used?

Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) by default. You can change it in settings if your tradition uses another.

Is the chart calculated for the place of birth or where I live now?

For the place of birth. The birth chart never changes. Daily readings and transits use your current city.
