Your Moon sign, or Rasi, is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the moment you were born. In Vedic astrology it is the most personal sign in the chart: it describes your mind and emotions, and it is the sign used for the daily Rasi Palan, for marriage matching and for timing. Enter your birth details to find your Rasi and your Janma Nakshatra.
The Moon moves quickly, about 13 degrees a day, and changes sign every two and a half days. Classical texts treat it as the mind (Manas), so its sign colours how you feel and react. Indian families read horoscopes, Sade Sati and Chandrashtama from the Moon sign, which is why most Vedic forecasts ask for your Rasi rather than your Sun sign.
The Moon's exact position also gives your birth star, one of 27 Nakshatras of 13°20′ each, and its quarter (Pada). The Nakshatra decides your starting Dasha, the first syllable traditionally used for naming, and the Porutham and Guna Milan results in marriage matching.
Because the Moon can change sign or Nakshatra within a day, a birth near the boundary needs an accurate time. If the result shows the Moon close to the edge of a sign or star, check your birth time carefully.
Vedic astrology measures signs against the fixed stars (the sidereal zodiac), while Western astrology measures them from the spring equinox (the tropical zodiac). Because the equinox slowly moves backwards against the stars, the two zodiacs are now about 24 degrees apart. The difference is called the Ayanamsa. Naksathra uses the Lahiri Ayanamsa by default, so your Vedic sign is often one sign earlier than the sign in a Western magazine.
A single sign is a useful starting point, but it is one of many factors. Your full birth chart shows all nine planets, the twelve houses, divisional charts such as the Navamsa and your Dasha periods. You can open it for free with the same details you entered here.
The zodiac sign the Moon occupied at your birth, called Rasi in Vedic astrology.
Yes. Rasi usually refers to the Moon sign in everyday Indian use.
The Moon represents the mind and moves fast, so it reflects daily experience more closely than the Sun.
The lunar mansion the Moon occupied at birth, one of 27. The calculator shows it with its Pada.
Usually an approximate time is enough, unless the Moon was near the edge of a sign or Nakshatra.
Most often because of the zodiac used: Vedic sites use sidereal positions, Western sites use tropical ones. Different Ayanamsas can also matter near a boundary.
Each sign has a ruling planet: Mars for Mesha and Vrischika, Venus for Rishabha and Thula, Mercury for Mithuna and Kanya, the Moon for Kataka, the Sun for Simha, Jupiter for Dhanus and Meena, and Saturn for Makara and Kumbha.
Yes. Sade Sati is the period when Saturn transits the signs before, on and after your Moon sign.
