Ruby (Manikya) – gemstone of the Sun

Ruby, Manikya in Sanskrit, is the gemstone of the Sun. It is associated with confidence, leadership, vitality and recognition from authority. Of all the Navaratna stones it is one of the most often recommended for people whose Sun is functionally benefic but weak, and one of the most often misused when the Sun rules difficult houses.

What the Sun governs

The Sun is the natural significator of the self, the father, government, authority, the heart, the eyes and bone strength. A favourable Sun shows dignity, clarity of purpose and recognition; a weak Sun shows hesitation, lack of support from seniors or low vitality. Ruby is chosen to strengthen these qualities when the Sun is a friend to your Ascendant.

Who is it traditionally suggested for

Ruby is usually considered for Aries, Leo and Sagittarius Ascendants, where the Sun rules a Trikona (1st, 5th or 9th house), and sometimes for Scorpio Ascendant, where it rules the 10th. It is generally avoided for Taurus, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius Ascendants, for whom the Sun rules challenging houses or is an enemy of the Ascendant lord. The Sun’s own condition: sign, house and aspects, is checked before any recommendation.

Quality and wearing guidance

Natural, untreated rubies from Burma (Myanmar), Mozambique or Sri Lanka are preferred, with clear red to pinkish-red colour and no cracks. Traditional texts suggest a stone of at least three carats set in gold or copper and worn on the ring finger of the right hand on a Sunday morning during the Sun’s Hora, after reciting the Surya mantra. Red garnet or red spinel are used as lower-cost substitutes.

Caution

Gemstones amplify the planet they represent, including the houses it rules in your chart. Wear one only after a full chart review, never as a quick fix, and stop if you feel unwell or unsettled.

Gemstones strengthen, they do not fix

A gemstone amplifies its planet's results in every house that planet rules in your chart, including the difficult ones. That is why classical practice recommends a full chart review before wearing one, and why many astrologers prefer mantra, charity or lighter substitutes when a planet rules a challenging house.
