Rasi Kattam

Rasi Kattam: your chart in the South Indian square

The Rasi Kattam is the square chart used across Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. The twelve signs sit in fixed boxes around the edge, starting with Meena at the top left and moving clockwise, and the planets are written into the box of the sign they occupied at your birth.

How to read the boxes

The signs never move in the South Indian chart. The standard layout places Meena in the top left corner, then Mesha, Rishabha and Mithuna across the top, Kataka and Simha down the right, Kanya, Tula, Vrischika and Dhanus along the bottom, and Makara and Kumbha up the left. A diagonal line or the letters La mark the Lagnam, the rising sign.

Rasi and Navamsam side by side

Most Tamil horoscopes print two squares: the Rasi Kattam and the Navamsa Kattam. The Navamsam divides each sign into nine parts and is read for marriage, inner strength and the true dignity of each planet. A planet in the same sign in both squares, called Vargottama, is considered strong.

Planet abbreviations

Tamil charts use short names: Su for Suriyan, Chandran, Sevvai, Budhan, Guru, Sukkiran, Sani, Raagu and Kethu, often with a small mark for retrograde planets. The chart here labels each planet in your chosen language and shows the degree on tap.

North and South styles

The North Indian diamond chart fixes the houses and moves the signs; the South Indian square fixes the signs and moves the houses. Both carry the same information. Switch styles at any time if your family is used to the other.

Printing and sharing

Families often keep a printed Jaadhagam for marriage matching and temple use. The print view lays out both squares, the birth details, the Nakshatra and Pada, and the Dasha balance at birth on a single page.

Reading the houses from the Lagnam

Once you know the Lagnam box, count clockwise to find each house: the box after the Lagnam is the second house of family and speech, then the third of courage and siblings, the fourth of home and mother, and so on to the twelfth of expense and rest. A planet in the box seven places from the Lagnam is in the house of marriage and partnership. Because the signs are fixed in the square, you can read the same chart for any house by counting from that box, which is how Tamil astrologers quickly judge a chart from the Moon or from Venus as well as from the Lagnam.

Draw your Rasi Kattam

  1. Enter birth details. Date, time and place.
  2. Read the Lagnam. Find the box marked La.
  3. Compare with Navamsam. Look for planets in the same sign in both squares.
