Classical Yoga

Anapha Yoga

Anapha Yoga is one of the Chandra Yogas, the combinations formed around the Moon. It is present when one or more planets other than the Sun occupy the 12th house from the Moon. Rahu and Ketu are not counted.

How Anapha Yoga forms and what it gives

Anapha, a planet in the twelfth house from the Moon, is said in the classics to give a well-formed body, good conduct, fame and freedom from disease, with a taste for renunciation as life matures. The planet involved colours the result, so Jupiter brings dignity and Saturn quiet endurance. Its gift is contentment that does not need applause.

How it forms in a chart

Find the Moon’s sign and look at the signs on either side of it. Anapha Yoga forms when one or more planets other than the Sun occupy the 12th house from the Moon. Together with Anapha, Sunapha and Durudhara, it is the opposite of Kemadruma, which forms when both sides are empty.

What it is said to give

Texts associate Anapha Yoga with a dignified personality, good health, a pleasant manner and freedom from serious worry. The planet in the 12th from the Moon colours the result: benefics give generosity and calm, malefics give strength but also a tendency to spend or withdraw.

Strength, timing and cancellation

The yoga is stronger when the Moon itself is bright and well placed and when the flanking planets are dignified. Its results show especially during the Dashas of the Moon and of the planets that form it.

Classical source

The rule used here follows Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika (Chandra Yogas).

What a Yoga is

In Jyotisha a Yoga is a specific combination of planets, signs and houses that classical texts single out for its results. Some promise status or wealth, some describe character, and a few describe difficulties. A Yoga only gives full results when the planets forming it are strong, unafflicted and activated by the Dasha of one of them.

Checking for Anapha Yoga in your chart

Yoga detection depends on exact house positions and lordships, which change with the Ascendant. Cast your birth chart to see which classical Yogas are present, how strong the participating planets are and when their periods run.

Common questions

How does Anapha Yoga form?

The description at the top of this page gives the classical rule. Detection depends on house lordships from your Ascendant, so the same planets can form it in one chart and not another.

When does Anapha Yoga give results?

Mostly during the Mahadasha or Antardasha of the planets that form it, and when they are strong by sign and house.

Is Anapha Yoga rare?

Some form of it appears in many charts. What matters is strength: well-placed, unafflicted planets give clear results; weak ones give mild results.

Can Anapha Yoga be cancelled?

Classical texts list conditions that weaken a Yoga, such as debilitation, combustion or affliction of the planets involved. A full chart reading checks these.

Where is Anapha Yoga described?

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika (Chandra Yogas)

How do I check if I have Anapha Yoga?

Cast a free birth chart; the Yogas section lists every classical combination found, with the planets involved.

Are Rahu and Ketu counted for Anapha Yoga?

No. The classical rule counts only the five planets Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn.

Is Anapha Yoga common?

Yes, it appears in many charts. The nature of the planets involved matters more than its mere presence.
